What is Composite Tiles?

Composite roof tiles are man-made from polymers, recycled plastics, rubber or other blends and molded to look like clay, concrete or slate tile. They are much lighter than real tile, resist cracking under foot better, and install with standard tools. Performance depends heavily on the manufacturer, so fire, wind and impact ratings should be checked for each product.

Often chosen for

  • A tile look on a structure that can't carry clay or concrete
  • Roofs that get some foot traffic

Types and installation methods

Composite slate-style tilesSee also synthetic slate shingles.
Composite barrel/Spanish-style tilesImitate clay barrel tile at a fraction of the weight.
Stone-coated metal tilesA metal-based alternative, covered on our metal roofing page.

Pros and cons

ProsCons
  • Lightweight
  • Less brittle than clay or concrete
  • Many styles and colors
  • Shorter proven track record than clay, concrete or slate
  • Quality varies by manufacturer
  • May look less authentic up close

How long does Composite Tiles last?

[Lifespan: no independent source found for composite roof tiles (InterNACHI lists 'simulated slate' at 10–35 years; not the same product category). Leave this out, or add a range from the manufacturer you install, with a citation]

Signs your Composite Tiles roof needs repair

  • Cracked or warped tiles
  • Fading
  • Loose fasteners
  • Leaks at flashing

Repair or replace?

Replace damaged tiles with the same product line where possible. If a product line has failed broadly or been discontinued, re-roofing with a better-rated product may be the better choice.

What affects the cost

We price every job after inspecting and measuring the roof. These are the main factors:

  • Product line and manufacturer
  • Roof size, pitch and complexity
  • Tear-off and deck repair
  • Underlayment, trim and flashing

[Owner: optional typical price range from your own jobs. Leave out if you prefer quoting per job]

Composite Tiles FAQ

Are composite roof tiles any good?

Good composite tiles are light, durable and convincing, but quality varies by manufacturer. Check fire, wind and impact ratings and the manufacturer's track record.

Composite vs clay tile: which is better?

Clay has a far longer proven lifespan and authentic appearance; composite is lighter, less brittle and works where the structure can't carry clay.

Can composite tiles be walked on?

They are generally less brittle than clay or concrete, but follow the manufacturer's guidance and leave roof walking to roofers.
