What is Synthetic Shingles?

Synthetic (composite) shingles are man-made from polymers, rubber or other composite materials and molded to look like natural slate or cedar shakes. They are much lighter than slate, avoid wood's rot and moisture problems, and are often chosen where the look of slate or shake is wanted without the weight or cost. Products vary widely between manufacturers, so fire, wind and impact ratings should be checked product by product.

Often chosen for

  • Homes wanting a slate or shake look on a lighter structure
  • Replacing worn cedar without wood maintenance
  • Owners comparing slate costs

Pros and cons

ProsCons
  • Much lighter than natural slate
  • No rot, splitting or moss like wood
  • Many products carry fire and impact ratings (check each)
  • Installs with standard roofing tools
  • Shorter proven track record than natural slate
  • Quality and appearance vary by manufacturer
  • Can fade or look less authentic up close
  • Usually more expensive than standard asphalt

How long does Synthetic Shingles last?

Estimated life expectancy: 10–35 years (simulated slate), from InterNACHI's Standard Estimated Life Expectancy Chart. InterNACHI says these figures assume regular maintenance and normal wear and are guidelines, not guarantees. Real service life depends on installation quality, drainage, exposure and upkeep.

Signs your Synthetic Shingles roof needs repair

  • Cracked or warped pieces
  • Fading or surface wear
  • Loose fasteners after wind
  • Leaks at flashing

Repair or replace?

Individual synthetic shingles can be replaced, ideally with the same product line. If a product has failed broadly (warping, cracking, fading), replacement with a better-rated product or natural material may be the better choice.

What affects the cost

We price every job after inspecting and measuring the roof. These are the main factors:

  • Product line and manufacturer
  • Roof size, pitch and complexity
  • Tear-off and deck repair
  • Underlayment and flashing
  • Accessories (ridge, starter pieces)

Synthetic Shingles FAQ

Is synthetic slate as good as real slate?

Synthetic slate is far lighter and usually less expensive, but natural slate has a much longer proven lifespan. Synthetic is a good option where the structure or budget rules out real slate.

Are synthetic shingles fire-resistant?

Many products carry Class A fire ratings, but not all. Check the specific product's ratings before choosing.

Can synthetic shingles be repaired?

Yes. Damaged pieces can be replaced individually, preferably with the same product line so they match.

How long does synthetic slate last?

InterNACHI's estimated life expectancy chart lists simulated slate at 10–35 years with regular maintenance.
